Making Winter Magic Happen in the Smokies

If you’ve ever stood at the base of Ober Mountain and looked up to see the slopes blanketed in snow while the rest of Tennessee hasn’t seen its first frost, you might wonder: how is that even possible?

After all, the Volunteer State doesn’t usually make the list of “snowiest” destinations in the country. In fact, Tennessee averages about 17% less snowfall than the U.S. average of 28 inches per year, meaning more mild days and fewer natural snowfalls. Thanks to cutting-edge technology, a dedicated snowmaking team, and a touch of Smoky Mountain spirit, Ober Mountain can make its own winter magic as early as October!

The Science (and Art) of Snowmaking

Creating that perfect snow day feeling isn’t luck — it’s innovation in action. Ober Mountain has invested heavily in advanced snowmaking systems to make sure every visitor can enjoy consistent, high-quality snow throughout the winter season.

SMI Snowmakers Latitude 90 Machines

Ober currently operates eleven SMI Snowmakers Latitude 90 Machines, each one a powerhouse of precision snowmaking. These machines can create real snow straight from water, even when natural snowfall is scarce and temperatures hover above freezing.

So how does it work? Think of them as supercharged freezers on the mountain — no chemical additives, no gimmicks, just pure, frozen water turned into beautiful, powdery snow. The result: fuller slopes, better texture, and a smoother, more natural ride whether you’re skiing, snowboarding, or just soaking in the snowy scenery.

This technology not only enhances the experience for guests but also extends the ski season — giving adventurers more time to carve, glide, and enjoy Smoky Mountain winter vibes.

SnowMagic: The Coolest Tech on the Mountain

Ober Mountain is also home to three SnowMagic snowmaking machines, equipped with the revolutionary Infinite Crystals Snowmaking Technology (ICS™). These machines don’t need freezing temperatures to create snow — they can produce fluffy, white snowflakes even when the thermometer says it’s still 70+ degrees outside.

Each SnowMagic unit can churn out up to 150 tons of snow per day, powered by an intricate system that draws water from Ober’s on-site retention ponds. That water is filtered, frozen inside the machines, and then blown out in a fine mist that crystallizes into real snow.

This early snowmaking process is how Ober’s Snow Tubing area comes to life weeks before the official start of winter. By the time the holidays roll around, the mountain is already blanketed in layers of snow ready for tubing thrills, ski runs, and family fun.

What This Means for You

For guests, Ober’s investment in snowmaking isn’t just about impressive technology — it’s about ensuring that winter always shows up, no matter what the forecast says.

Whether you’re a first-time skier, a seasoned snowboarder, or someone who just loves to sip hot cocoa while watching the snow fall, Ober Mountain promises a consistent, fun, and unforgettable winter experience.

So, as our snowmaking machines roar to life and the first flurries start to swirl across the slopes, we invite you to join us for another amazing season in the Smokies. The snow might be manmade — but the memories? They’re 100% real.
